Hot take, I think he'll finish it before he dies. At least Winds of Winter, idk about A Dream of Spring. I think people have the misconception that Martin is just sitting around, but I think the truth is a lot more understandable. He started these books when he was in his 40's and probably never expected them to get as big as they did. I think at a certain point he realized he didn't want to spend the final years of his life only focusing on his work and writing these books, and so he took a break and he just hasn't had the motivation to go back for a long time. But now that he's been away for awhile, he seems really interested in telling more stories again, and I think he's just struggling to make up for all the time that he lost. In his mind he already knew where the story would go years and years ago, and so the prospect of writing new stories excites him more than finishing an outline that's been floating around in his mind for over a decade. But I do sincerely think he'll finish Winds of Winter, I think he's shown more excitement to return now than he has in years and I believe he'll write that book before he dies.

My guess is that he is that his ending for the books is close enough to the TV show that everyone hated that he's stuck between rewriting a new ending or keep the TV show ending. He wrote books 1-5 in 15 years and then spent the next 13 years doing everything but writing book 6 & 7. All while whinging that people say he might die before finishing the series instead of worrying about him as a person. Can you imagine the amount of ego you would need to attach to yourself for you to bitch and moan at your place of work for daring to ask when a project that you've claimed to have worked on for years might be done? Can you imagine how much more ego you would need to respond to your bosses concerns that you might not be done with your project before your vacation in 3 months with complaints that they're not concerned about the vacation and actually it's about the project. Your boss tells you that you've already been working on it for 3 years and have shown zero progress beyond vague, begrudged updates via 2003 style personal BLOG and how that's not how actual professionals update their customers. You respond with a scree and present a group of smaller projects no one gives a shit about and you weren't asked to do but you've obviously spent an insane amount of time on. While presenting these new projects all the rest of your coworkers are sincerely wondering what the fuck is wrong with you. That's where George is at. He's the shitty coworker that has been sitting on a project for 13 years with nothing to show for it and is mad at everyone else for asking why.
